Community – Do you have one?

So do you have a community that you work in and build relationships? Also does your community allow you to create lasting value from the people within your community? And you might ask What do you mean by Value?

Merriam-Webster states several definitions but the two that are most relevant to this discussion are below:

a fair return or equivalent in goods, services, or money for something exchanged

something (as a principle or quality) intrinsically valuable or desirable

Does your community provide you with what you need to have a better life or business? So this morning I attended a specific BNI (Business Networking International) group as a guest. This specific group has a bout 35 members who pay to be in the group and give each other referrals and hopefully business. (FYI – this group does really well. I think they are in the million dollar mark for closed business referrals just so you know).

There are many different types of communities both online and physical. There is the mainstream that can be called community, Facebook and Linkedin and from a virtual standpoint Second Life and Kaneva. (check these two out they are pretty cool). In  the physical world there are many different types of communities, from your church group, to chambers of commerce to Kiwanis or  Rotary Club (for those of you under 30 you will need to look up those last two).

The point being is that we seem to all be looking for communities that add value to our business or life. Most people go to a weekly, monthly or quarterly meeting of some form or other of the physical communities I mentioned above. If you’re still not getting the idea think  book club, mom’s club, fraternities and sororities. There I think I covered almost everyone now. Hopefully you are starting to see what I mean.

Community (whatever kind you like or belong to) provides something of value to you or you would not join and attend the meetings. In order for communities to work you need to be active in the community. That means you need to participate. Also the members of your community need to participate. Reminds me of that recurring story where there is always one or two in the group that get the benefit of the community but they never provide any value. Don’t name names but you know someone came to mind, lol.

So Community, it’s a lot more important than we initially think. Without community we are somewhat at a disadvantage. I’m a big believer in leading the pack but at the end of the day there are not really many successful “lone wolf’s”. (even if they say they are, if you look closely they have a very strong community that has helped them achieve their successful “lone wolf” status).

The point is that we all need community to get by in life and be successful. Whatever successful means to you. I have a tendency to think business but community comes into play for all walks of life. To the single mom, to the teenager and college student, stay at home mom or dad, home-schooler and yes the business man or woman. You get the point.

So if you don’t have a community go find one that fits your definition of adding value to your business and life. Oh and shortly I will have something that will help you keep your community alive and vibrant. Stay tuned!

So ask yourself have you found your Community?

So does this look familiar? It is of course what you see when you come to the Social Media Solutions page. So why is it in this blog this week? Well let’s look at the last question “have you found your Community?” Social Media should be about “Adding Value to Your Life”

We want to ask for your help. We are creating an Online Business Community that is geared around “adding value to your life”, MySylbert.  Yes it has advertisements, but  more importantly it also will have content from different blogs, business magazines, specialty magazines, businesses and people like you sharing information that will help others in their daily lives. Whether that be business or personal. It is a place for you to connect to businesses, people and opportunity.

We truly want your help in creating this community so we have put up the basics for our soft launch and we want the people who read this page to tell us what you want and how you want to use MySylbert. Click on the logo and then please create a profile and then let’s start the conversation. This is an ongoing project that will continuously change as we create the community that you need and want.

People who are online gravitate toward the communities that they find interest in, and also that they can find the information they need and also where they feel connected. We are asking for your help in letting us know why you belong to the communities you belong to and what drew you there.

MySylbert will strive to be the bridge between the business community and the people; whether that be employees, prospects, customers or just people looking to network. It’s all about the conversation. People will do business with companies that do business the way they want to do business. You may have heard me say this before but it breaks down to businesses actually communicating with their employees, customers, prospects and shareholders. And even more important, listening to what their employees, customers, prospects and shareholders have to say and doing something about it.

It seems like there is a great divide these days. Those people who are on Facebook and those that are on LinkedIn. Both are very valuable and we are trying to find a way to bridge the two.

We are not asking that you leave your current communities we are just asking you to help us create a place where businesses and people can connect in a valuable way that adds value to the lives of both the people, and the people running and working in the businesses.

This is our beta so help us create a strong business community that gives you what you need. In order for this community to be successful we need your help. Thank you in advance for your help and remember we are waiting for you to continue building this community.
