What’s in a name?

Dale Carnegie says that a person’s name is the sweetest sound anyone can hear. So what about companies? Have you thought much about your name, your logo and your brand? There are literally millions of sites and blogs on branding. If you Google Brand you get over 2 million results and if you Google Brand Image you get 414 million. So do you think your Brand is important?

Well we do, or rather I do. So let me give you a brief insight into our brand. First let’s look at the logo.

So what do you see? A Butterfly? And how does the Butterfly make you feel? How do the colors make you feel? But wait…how many of you see two people facing each other?

The Butterfly stands for Change and the Two People Facing Each Other stand for engagement, communication, and connection.

And the color both in the name and the logo of Orange? Well my mother says it best and I put this quote on our website.

“Poets tell us there is no other word that rhymes with ‘orange’. That makes the ‘orange’ unique. Ergo! My son’s business is a unique business, so it carries the name Orange SMS.” Dr. Janice T. Adkins

The SMS is from our original dba (doing business as) Social Media Solutions. The name itself, Orange SMS, encourages conversation and it’s a great opening when they say what does your company name mean? Now if you go to my website, www.orange-sms.com, you’ll see my picture also prevalent on the site. When I thought about how to rebrand my company I realized that I was a large part of that brand. Yes we have a team of people that we work with on projects, but at the end of the day I’m held accountable and it gives people a personal connection with me, the owner.

So What’s In A Name? As you can see from above, a lot! But don’t take my word for it. Go Google Brand or Brand Image for yourself. There are millions of opinions and what to do and what not to do. At the end of the day YOU OWN YOUR BRAND. It’s putting your name on your service or product whether you are a one or two man shop or a billion dollar company like IBM, Apple, Google and the list goes on. There is a lot that goes into designing and creating a brand. There are companies making thousands and millions helping companies with their brand. Whatever you do make sure that you are comfortable with your brand and can explain what you do in 30 seconds or less. Your brand doesn’t have to yell out what you do, it just needs to be memorable and powerful enough to get people to pay attention.
